Advanced Image-Guided Endovascular Interventions by Segmentation and 3D/2D Registration of Cerebral Angiograms

Advanced Image-Guided Endovascular Interventions by Segmentation and 3D/2D Registration of Cerebral Angiograms
(TÜBİTAK - Slovenya İkili İşbirliği, 2014 - 2017)

The scope of the proposed bilateral project is the development of innovative medical image processing and analysis methods and their application on cerebrovascular images of different modalities with the aim to advance and enhance the current cerebral image-guided endovascular interventions in terms of better navigation and delivery of therapy.

The two groups (Turkey and Slovenia) will thus focus on the problems of segmentation and 3D-2D registration of angiographic images. The main objectives are the development and thorough validation of novel segmentation and 3D- 2D registration methods in terms of accuracy, robustness and speed.

The proposed research project is dedicated to advanced and emerging technologies in image-guided medical procedures through the development of innovative methods in real-time segmentation and registration for endovascular interventions. Based on the actuality of image-guided endovascular interventions and results the researchers of both groups achieved in the past, which are reflected in numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals with high impact factor, the applied value of their research, and successful translation and implementation of methods and systems in national and foreign healthcare institutions and business communities, a high impact of the proposed bilateral project is expected. The research activities of the two groups are mainly concentrated around the following themes: 1) development of accurate and fast methods for segmentation of 3D images of brain vasculature (Istanbul Technical University); 2) development of accurate, robust and fast 3D-2D registration methods (ITU and University of Ljubljana); and 3) assessment of the potential of the novel methods to improve existing state-of-the-art image-guided endovascular interventions.
